Breast cancer advocates from the United States and around the Middle East converged in Egypt from October 21 to 27 for a number of awareness-raising events held under the auspices of Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, First Lady of Egypt. The events were organized by Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Breast Cancer Foundation of Egypt, with support directly from USAID, and from USAID grantees The Johns Hopkins University, and the Institute of International Education. Among the week's events: a large media event in Alexandria; trainings; turning the pyramid pink for breast cancer awareness; the Egypt Race for the Cure at the Pyramids of Giza (involving approximately 7000 participants); and the University of Florida's Multidisciplinary Symposium on Breast Disease. USAID support included funding major elements of the programs as well as assistance with event organization and coordination.
